Non, non, il ne s’agît pas d’un penchant coupable à l’égard d’un magasin de bricolage au slogan millénaire qui m’amène à rédiger cet article, mais bien plutôt une série d’infos croisées depuis la dernière WWDC 2014, et relayées avec insistance par de nombreux sites depuis… Seigneur, ce ne sont que quelques docs… Des docs oui, mais… bon ok…

Auto Layout + Adaptive UI
De la même manière qu’Auto Layout, le concept d’Adaptive UI présenté à la WWDC 2014 (session 216) semble confirmer qu’Apple travaille sur un mode ‘split-screen’ pour ses devices. Pour être adaptatives, les applications doivent exploiter le nouveau concept de « size classes ». Jusqu’ici, les différentes « tailles » des applications étaient fixes et clairement identifiées, selon que l’on parle de l’iPhone ou de l’iPad et d’une orientation portrait ou paysage. Mais on parle désormais d’écrans « normaux » et « compacts », avec une application qui peut s’étaler en largeur ou en hauteur.

Split Screen
iOS 8 is likely to supercharge the functionality of Apple’s iPad with a new split-screen multitasking feature, according to sources with knowledge of the enhancement in development. These people say that the feature will allow iPad users to run and interact with two iPad applications at once. Up until now, each iPad application either developed by Apple or available on the App Store is only usable individually in a full-screen view.
The ability to use multiple applications simultaneously on a tablet’s display takes a page out of Microsoft’s playbook. Microsoft’s Surface line of tablets has a popular “snap” multitasking feature that allows customers to snap multiple apps onto the screen for simultaneous usage. The feature is popular in the enterprise and in environments where users need to handle multiple tasks at the same time.

A split-screen iPad multitasking feature has been requested by iPad fans for several years and some designers have even designed sample user-interfaces, unofficial tweaks, and videos for how they would like the feature to function. The feature is said to be designed with the 9.7-inch iPad display in mind, and it is unclear if the feature will work on the smaller-screened iPad mini. The feature is said to work exclusively in landscape mode. The feature may also be key to a larger-screened iPad, which Apple is actively developing for a launch either later this year or in 2015.

Les premiers tests, avaient semble-t-il laissés entendre que l’écran d’accueil d’iOS 8 avait été conçu pour faire tourner deux applications côte à côte, avec à la moitié de l’écran allouée à chacune selon une disposition 3/4 et 1/4. Le développeur Steve Troughton Smith, en tout cas, avait confirmé, après examen du SDK d’iOS 8, que le SpringBoard embarquait déjà les API nécessaires pour afficher deux applications à l’écran, avec deux ratios possibles, 1/4-3/4 ou 1/2. Le futur d’iOS semble donc sonner la fin des interfaces adaptées au pixel près aux appareils.
WWDC 2015 + iOS 9
D’après 9to5Mac et MacG, Apple pourrait finalement annoncer l’arrivée du multi-fenêtrage dans iOS9, avec la possibilité d’afficher deux applications côte à côte sur l’écran selon des rapports de 1/2, 1/3 et 2/3 en fonction des apps.
« Sources now say that Apple plans to show off the side-by-side feature for iOS 9 using currently available iPad models. The latest plans suggest that the split-screen mode will support 1/2, 1/3, and 2/3 views depending on the apps. When split, the screen can either display two different apps side-by-side, or multiple views of the same app. This would enable iPad users to see two separate Safari tabs, or compare a pair of Pages documents at the same time. Sources are quick to warn, however, that the feature could still be pulled before next month’s conference, as additional polish would be needed to bring it to the same level as other features that will be making their way into the first iOS 9 beta next month. »
While Apple has tested the feature with plans to release it for current iPads, we are told that the feature was actually developed with a larger, 12-inch iPad in mind, so it could potentially be held back for a debut with the new hardware. Sources have confirmed that Apple is testing jumbo-sized iPads internally codenamed “J98″ and “J99,” which are apparently larger versions of the Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad Air 2, save for additional speaker holes. Dubbed “iPad Pro” in prior reports, the larger device’s launch date is yet to be locked down, as the tablet is still waiting for its software to be finished up, and new hardware components to be readily available.
